Associating with the Best People

Accounts Payable isn’t just about paying the bills, right? It’s accounting, customer service, bank relations, research, monitoring discrepancies, vendor relations, and more. Since there is so much more to your job than just mailing a check, we thought we’d help you with some additional resources to build your knowledgebase, add more value to your organization, and be able to see into the future of AP.

Along the way, we have discovered some great associations which could lend a helping hand…

If you are an AP/Procurement/P2P professional, there is no doubt you should know about IOFM, The Institute of Finance and Management. It is absolutely your first stop for educational webinars, content and industry certifications. We recommend their bi-annual conference - Mekorma just attended their APP2P Fall conference in Las Vegas and the event was chock full of very valuable content for anyone in an AP or Procurement role.

At said conference, we learned about NACHA – The Electronic Payments Association.  As their website states: NACHA creates broadly adopted payment and financial messaging rules and standards through consensus-led governance, international collaboration, and innovative development practices. Essentially, they are bringing together stakeholders to ensure that EFT and ACH payments all play by the same rules with compatibility and integration across a range of systems. They created the NACHA Operating Rules, which helps to ensure that millions of payments happen without fail through a collaboration of businesses, banks, credit unions, consumer advocates, government institutions and industry providers.

If you are interested in benchmarking, best practices, process improvement and knowledge management, the APQC or American Productivity & Quality Center could certainly help. Like IOFM above, they offer training, webinars, access to knowledge management experts and in-person events. Then, like NACHA, they promote the concept of speaking the same language around defining work processes comprehensively and without redundancies. It’s all about improving your performance, so if you’re focused upon management in the areas of knowledge, financial, human capital, supply chain and process/performance, this is the association for you.

Business Payments Coalition

Perhaps joining a volunteer organization to promote the adoption of electronic business to business (B2B) payment and remittance data might help advance your career. At no cost, consider the Business Payments Coalition. It’s a group of organizations and individuals working together. The Coalition’s overarching goal is to make B2B payments more efficient across the end-to-end process, that is, to achieve straight-through-processing across both the procure-to-pay and order-to-cash cycles. The Coalition accomplishes this objective by addressing problems and barriers that make it difficult for businesses to use electronic alternatives to paper checks and remittance advices.

Lastly, are you using any payment cards? The NAPCP – Advancing Commercial Card & Payment Practices Worldwide is a membership-based professional association committed to providing resources, discounts, career advancement and eNetworking. They provide an abundance of information for anyone who wants to move far beyond printing checks. Since 1999, they have attracted over 19,000 professionals, so you will be in very good company with a clear majority of members being end-users.

It’s always wonderful to be among your peers. Imagine all the real-life examples, solutions and exciting advancements in Accounts Payable you can take advantage of.
